Privacy Policy

Nous Cinema ("Nous", "we", "our") is a social film discovery app developed by Belmore Pictures. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights.
1. Data We Collect
Data you provide directly
- Display name — the name you enter when creating or joining a session. This is not linked to any account.
- Newsletter subscription — if you subscribe to the Nous-Letter, we collect your name and email address.
- Session activity — your streaming service selections, film votes (swipe left/right), rankings, and viewing profile choices during a session.
Data collected automatically
- Device identifier — a random ID generated locally on your device to identify you within sessions. This is not your Apple IDFA or Android Ad ID.
- Push notification token — if you opt in to notifications, we receive a device token from Apple Push Notification service (APNs) or Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) to deliver notifications.
- Language preference — your selected language, stored locally on your device.
2. How We Use Your Data
- Sessions — your display name, votes, and preferences are sent to our server to match films with your group in real time. This data is tied to a temporary session, not a permanent account.
- Oscars Ballot — ballot group membership, picks, and scores are stored on our server so your group can compare predictions.
- Push notifications — to notify you of group activity, recommendations from friends, and session invites.
- Newsletter — to send the Nous-Letter to subscribers. We do not share subscriber data with third parties.
3. Server & Data Storage
Our backend is hosted on Render (render.com). Session data, friend groups, recommendations, and ballot data are stored on our server.
- Film sessions — automatically deleted after 24 hours of inactivity.
- Friend groups & recommendations — stored until you leave the group or delete the data.
- Ballot groups — stored for the duration of the awards season and deleted afterward.
- Newsletter subscriptions — stored until you unsubscribe.
- Push tokens — stored until you disable notifications or uninstall the app.
We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with third parties for marketing purposes.
4. Third-Party Services
Apple App Store & Google Play Store
In-app purchases (such as Nous Premium) are processed entirely by Apple or Google. We do not collect or store any payment information, credit card details, or billing data.
JustWatch
Film availability and streaming data is sourced from JustWatch. No personal data is shared with JustWatch.
Google AdMob
Nous displays ads via the Google Mobile Ads SDK. AdMob may collect device identifiers (such as IDFA on iOS or Android Ad ID), IP address, and interaction data to serve personalised or contextual ads. Google's use of this data is governed by Google's Privacy Policy.
5. App Tracking Transparency (iOS)
On iOS 14.5 and later, Nous will request your permission before allowing AdMob to track your activity across other apps and websites. If you decline, ads will still appear but will not be personalised. You can change this at any time in your device Settings under Privacy & Security > Tracking.
6. Your Rights
Depending on your location, you may have the following rights under GDPR, CCPA, or similar legislation:
- Access — request a copy of the data we hold about you.
- Deletion — request that we delete your data from our servers.
- Correction — request correction of inaccurate data.
- Opt out — unsubscribe from the newsletter at any time, disable push notifications in your device settings, or deny ad tracking via App Tracking Transparency.

7. Children's Privacy
Nous is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with data, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.
8. Security
We use HTTPS encryption for all communication between the app and our server. Data is stored on infrastructure managed by Render with industry-standard security practices. However, no method of electronic transmission or storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
9. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last updated" date. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
